This past week, I attended a camp in Madison, WI for Ultimate.

It was the best week of my summer thus far. Here is just some of what I learned while attending the Next Level Ultimate Camp

    1. Day 1: Throwing to Space and Making Good Cuts

Stop 3-4 step cuts, get all of your cuts to 10 steps in one direction.
Throw n’ Go—Stop watching your throw
Throwing to space on deep throws- Flat throws not bendy

    1. Day 2: Stepping OUT on Throws, Clearing Hard, Good 2nd Cuts

If you are cutting and not going 80-100% then CLEAR.
      Pancake Catches
Step around defender by stepping out after fake.

    1. Day 3: Defense, Marking–Good Hands, Staying on Underside

Cover 50% of field with the body, cover 50% with the legs

Hand on hip playing defense—get that close
Stay under until there is an UP call
Listen to sidelines for UP call
Marking: Be small with kicks, don’t extend hands completely, bend in knees and shuffle, upright torso.

    1. Day 4: Handler Movement & Cutting–Swing! Throwing DEEP–IO!

      Dump and Swing as handlers.

When hucking… grip disc hard, step out, weight your non-pivot foot, use opposite hand to balance.

    1. Day 5: You Need Swagger! — Hector

All good teams have it, you need to reach a level of Ultimate where other teams know you are good just by stepping out on the field.

  • Monarch Ultimate Frisbee is a group of Juniors and Seniors who have grown through the ri-disc-ulous system. Our old name, ri-disc-ulous, was not fitting for the current team. Losing games due to lack of experience was our big problem, but not this year.

    Our new frisbee

Monarch Ultimate came off a strong fall season winning back-to-back tournaments. We have overhauled the offense completely and are learning how to play good defense. The defense on our team is the area that could improve the most.

Our head coach Jolian Dahl, Captain of Johnny Bravo “Professional” Ultimate frisbee team in Denver, has taught us so much in the one year we have known him! I credit him with much of our teams success.

We have had some additions since my freshman year like Matt Newell and Veikko Tikander who really have helped the team. But we have also had some members not able to play again which is too bad.

Our new uniforms will be ordered whenever people get their money in (including me) so if you are reading this and you haven’t yet paid, then DO IT.

Handlers are looking pretty solid this year, I think we could have some fun dominating sets.

So come out and watch some of our home games!

Sunday November 8th: The Best of Boulder Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

The scene was set at New Vista across from the CU campus, and right under the glorious flatirons of Boulder.

Our first game was New Vista, the tournament hosts. We battled back and forth until a hard cap made it 11-9 Monarch.

The second game was played against one of our bitter rivals Fairview. Losing the team’s best player to graduation, Fairview is in the re-building stages. We took care of Fairview 13-6? Not sure exact score on that game. Our 3rd game was Boulder, who, for the past two Frisbee seasons has bitch slapped us 13-0, 13-1. Similar to Fairview they lost their best players to graduation. This year we took it to em and won 13-1.

The championship was set, Monarch vs. New Vista. This game was intense at first, but the fatigue showed in New Vista’s star athletes. Monarch kept making play after play; deep throws, up-wind points, and we all played tight defense.

I had a layout catch that swung the momentum to Monarch for the win. Best of Boulder Champions 2009 with a score of 13-4. Great job Monarch Coyotes Frisbee! As Chris Bubernak would say….”and boom goes the dynamite”
