Are you tired of getting the same gifts for everyone’s birthday or wedding? Try mixing things up with an original idea, that is kind to mother nature.

A waterbottle is the best and cheapest gift idea. Unlike plastic water bottles that are thrown away or recycled after one use, you can reuse a Sigg water bottle over and over. With so much competition in the field from Nalgene among others, the prices have dropped Sigg-nificantly!

Do you (or the person who you’re giving the gift to) like to be outside and enjoy mother nature a.k.a why you want an eco friendly gift. Try going to Locals Have More Fun and checking out the T-shirts and Jackets that are made with sustainablity in mind. Read more about the process on their site.

Another great idea would be a compost tumbler. This is a cheap way to reduce trash. A tumbler only takes 5 minutes of effort per week! Not many people know about composting and the great benefits, but it isn’t difficult to understand.

Something else that is eco-friendly would be lightbulbs. Using CFL lightbulbs can save you money on energy bills. The life of a CFL bulb is long enough that you don’t have to replace them as often as normal bulbs, saving money in the end.

Using some of these ideas, you can really surprise someone! These are un-common gift idea’s that would surely be appreciated. With so many people trying to be eco-friendly in this era, eco-friendly gifts are a great idea!

Some people have the desire to be Eco-friendly, including myself.

Composting is an easy and effective way to cut down on trash. The benefit of composting is that you can take the compost out and use it around your garden or lawn.

So are you ready for composting?

You may not want to go through the effort of building a pile using cinder blocks, so maybe a compost bin or compost tumbler would be a better solution!

A compost tumbler is easier to manage and more time efficient.

The advantage of having a compost pile is that it has contact with more oxygen, allowing the compostables to break-up easier.

Composting is possible through the oxygen allowing the bacteria to break down organic items, and with the use of worms.

Some items that are compostable include

  • Grass Clippings
  • Leaves
  • Food scraps
  • Pond plants
  • NO DOG POOP
  • The last item on the list may be the most important. You don’t want to be putting that back on your tomato plants in the spring!

Overall our country is very wasteful.

garbage

American’s generally throw things away that they can’t sell at a garage sale, or we dont need anymore. We will recycle an occasional can or bottle, but only if the recycling is clearly labeled in a convienent location!

Some of the things that I think will change the “footprint” left by this nations generations are not very hard to accomplish.

  • Taking local transportation, like buses or electric trains.
  • This can significantly reduce time spent driving and burning all of that gas! Plus you dont have to deal with all of that rush hour traffic each day.

  • Recycling more of your recyclable items, and even composting when applicable.
  • Composted items can be turned into great ground soils!

  • Turning the lights off when you leave a room.
  • This one tends to be overlooked, but all across America lights are being wasted on empty rooms, PLEASE turn the light off.

It will not only save you money, but saves energy for the next time you need the light.

  • Hang your clothes on a clothing line, saving the energy that the dryer would have to use.
  • If more of the country can do these things in their daily lives, maybe it won’t be so hard to save our planet!
